Internet Explorer 5.0
Netscape Navigator 4.x
America On Line 4.x
Lotus Notes Client 4.6 or greater

Installation Instructions

Important

Adobe recommends that you not attempt to use previous versions of Acrobat and Brazil on the same system. Instead, uninstall other versions before installing Brazil.

When you are done testing Brazil, Adobe recommends that you uninstall Brazil before installing a previous version of Acrobat.

Installing and Uninstalling Brazil for Windows

To install Brazil, follow these steps:

- Uninstall Acrobat 4.x and Acrobat Reader 4.x using the uninstaller available through the Start menu.
- Make sure you have at least 115 MB of available disk space for a Typical installation of Brazil.
- Make sure you have turned off all anti-virus software before beginning the installation.
- Install Brazil.
- If you are using a Japanese system the fonts required by Acrobat will be installed automatically.

To uninstall Brazil, follow these steps:
- Uninstall Brazil and Brazil Reader using the uninstaller available through the Start menu.

Installation Issues

If the Acrobat Brazil installer or uninstaller fails to work properly, manually delete the file Uninst.isu from Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\98 or NT then reinstall Acrobat Brazil and uninstall.

If the Acrobat Brazil installer fails to complete an installation due to a lack of disk space, and you have changed the Typical installation using the Custom installation screens, the installer may be calculating the available disk space incorrectly. Quit the installer and manually check the amount of available disk space in the Windows Explorer to verify that you have adequate disk space to install the portions of Acrobat you have selected.

Reporting Bugs

Please select Bug Reporting on the beta test site at URL: https://beta1.adobe.com/acrobat5_beta/ and enter the data requested.

New Features Update

Adobe SVG Viewer 2.0

Acrobat Brazil for Windows and Acrobat Brazil Reader for Windows install Adobe SVG Viewer 2.0. To learn more about Adobe SVG Viewer 2.0 use your browser to open the ReadMeSVGViewer.html file located within your browser’s plugins directory.

Online Comments

Online comments is a new technology for Acrobat Brazil that allows users to store markup comments separate from a PDF file when viewing in the browser.

Online comments features:
-After commenting a PDF file, the user can save their comments on a server. Other users can view and manage those comments from within their browser.
-Brazil works with Microsoft Web Discussions Server and enables a workgroup to set up comment management without significant IT intervention.
-Using the WebDAV protocol, an Acrobat user can open and save PDF Files, export and import field data and/or comments from the Microsoft Web Discussions Server as if they were local directories.
-If Office 2000 is installed on the user’s system, Web Discussions are available on Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 platforms.

There are four basic online comments repository types which are settable through the Online Comments preferences dialog:

1) DAV FDF
This should be a URL that is Web DAV enabled, for example,
http://beta1.adobe.com:8686/Collab/
If users don't have the capability to set up a DAV capable web server themselves, then they can use the one provided by Adobe at the above mentioned URL but they should be aware that there is no security on this server and any Beta tester will be able to see their comments.

2) Folder FDF
Folder FDF is the same as DAV FDF except that it denotes a local file system. The Folder FDF must be on a mounted drive. To access Folder FDF select the Online Comments Preferences panel and then use the Browse button to select the desired folder.

3) Web Discussions Server
Simply put in the URL of the web discussions server, for example http://blah.foo.com. You must have Office 2000 or Windows 2000 installed for this option to be available. The Web Discussions server is set up through Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer, select Discuss/Discussions/Discussions Options to do this.

4) ADBC settings are either a data source name (DSN) or ODBC connection string.

DSN’s are arbitrary strings that are set up through the ODBC control panel on Windows.

An ODBC connection string example is:

DRIVER={SQLServer};SERVER=acrobatqe;UID=Collab1;PWD=Collab1;DATABASE=CollabDB
where:
DRIVER indicate SQL server
SERVER indicates the name of the database server
UID is the user to log in as
PWD is the password to use
- and -
DATABASE is the name of the online comments database

Important: to use a database repository, you must have a SQL server driver installed on your system before you install Acrobat Brazil.

Important points to remember about online comments.
1) The client user must have an identity.
On Windows this is typically the login name but can be set through the
Acrobat Identity preferences panel.
On Macintosh, this can be set a couple of different ways based on which
version of Mac OS you have but it is always observable in the File Sharing control
panel. This should also be modifiable from the Acrobat Identity preferences panel but there are
bugs in this area on Macintosh.

2) Avoid proxy servers when using DAV FDF
Some proxy servers do not allow the DAV verbs through. This can cause
problems since Online comments (especially on the Mac) sometimes uses DAV verbs. If the
user is behind a firewall and using a online comments repository behind the firewall, it is
best to configure browser to allow direct connections when communication with the
online comments repository.

Tagged PDF

Tagged PDF files are structured PDF files that contain enough marked PDF content that they are accessible and reflowable.

These features are available for testing:
-PDFMaker creates Tagged PDF files for Office 2000 applications so that most PDFs created from Office 2000 applications are accessible and reflowable.
-PDF files created from an Office 2000 document (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) can be exported to RTF. The improved SaveAs RTF feature preserves paragraphs as paragraphs and tables as tables.
-Reflow enables the content of a PDF document to be reflowed when the size of the viewing window changes. Roman language PDF documents created from Office 2000 Word should be reflowable. The reflow of double-byte language PDF documents is not an Acrobat Brazil feature.

Accessibility

Brazil’s accessibility features for Windows are:
-Full keyboard navigation
-Ability to set high contrast for black and white documents
-TouchUp can be used to add <alt> tags if they are needed.
-Screen reader support for Tagged PDF files.

-Any accessibility items, such as <alt> tags are carried through when creating a PDF file from an Office 2000 document, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
-The viewer makes use of Tagged PDF, when available, to produce the correct words and reading order of the text in a PDF file.

Accessibility Check:
-Verifies a PDF file’s accessibility, producing a list of inaccessible items.
-Checks whether the PDF is an image-only file (an image-only file has no OCR’ed data and is completely inaccessible)
-Checks whether all characters reliably map to Unicode
-Verifies that the PDF file is tagged and that all content can be reached by the accessibility plug-in
-Verifies that the PDF is not protected against access
-Verifies that visible non-text objects that are not artifact-marked content objects have Alt text associated with them
-Verifies that all text has a language associated with it.

-Screen reader support allows Tagged PDF files to be read by screen reader applications on Windows platforms. To use the screen reader support feature users need additional software on their desktops. If you are interested in trying out screen reader support, please let your Adobe contact know.

Productivity Enhancements

These features are available for testing:

Customizability:
-The Acrobat toolbars can be docked on the top, similar to Microsoft Office, and their geometry may be changed. Tool bars can be docked on the sides of the windows as well. Torn off toolbars can also be combined together by dragging.

Batch Operations:

Users can script repetitive viewer actions and apply them across a batch of PDF files. The following Viewer functions are scriptable:

-Page Manipulation: Crop, Rotate, Delete, Insert, Number
-Create/Delete Thumbnails
-Extract images as JPEG, PNG, or TIFF
-Obtain general information
-Optimize the document
-Summarize/Delete Annotations
-Print Documents
-Set Security on a document
-Set Open Information

-Users can define new Batchable operations through creation of JavaScripts.

Navigation Pane, Zooming and Digital Signature UI Improvements:

The intuitive nature of Acrobat’s interaction with the user is improved. There are improvements in the navigation pane, in zooming, and in the user interface for digital signatures

XML and Metadata

Brazil exploits XML wherever possible, in client/server communication and in the storage of extensible metadata. To view the metadata within a document select Document Properties from the File menu. Then, select Document Metadata. Acrobat Brazil does not support the editing of metadata.

Easier PDF Creation

Brazil improves the experience and consistency in creating PDF files, targeting Microsoft Office users on Windows for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Features are:
-The "Open as PDF" menu item in the File menu of Acrobat allows users to open HTML, text, and image files. Acrobat converts these to PDF format.
-New Acrobat menu items in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have a consistent look and feel among the three applications.
-PDF files created in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are accessible and reflowable.
-Catalog is selectable from the Acrobat Tools menu.

PDF Consultant

PDF Consultant is a framework that allows analysis of and reporting on PDF files. Brazil provides Audit Space Usage, Optimize Space, and Detect and Remove agents built on the PDF Consultant framework. These features are available for testing:

Detect and Remove Agent:
The PDF Consultant’s Detect and Remove agent "detects" JavaScripts, Image Alternates, File Attachments, and other external items. It can either report how many were detected or remove them from the document.

Optimize Space Agent:
-Removes unused named destinations to decrease the size of a PDF file.

Audit Space Usage Agent:
-Reports the number of bytes used in a PDF file in each of these areas: Fonts, Images, Thumbnails, Bookmarks, Outlines, Content Streams, Structure, Forms, Named Destinations, Comments, and the Xref table.
-Reports the total number of bytes used by the items above and the file size.

Note: If a file has been append-saved, the agent's report may not make sense when compared to the file's total size. To obtain a clearer comparison, the file should be saved-as thus causing a full save to occur.

Professional Printing & High End Features

The features listed in the following section provide solutions to PDF workflow problems experienced by the design professional.

Color management:

Viewer - Working spaces, choice of color management system (CMS) and Black Point Compensations are all selectable within the user interface (UI). The Color Management UI offers the ability to choose and import a Color Settings File (CSF). Brazil doesn’t add settings to the Color Settings File for export, so new CSF files are not created. The Brazil Viewer provides host-based color management when printing. The advanced print dialog allows the choice of an output profile. Brazil will ship with the standard profiles that ship with other Adobe applications.

Distiller – Now loads common Color Settings Files used by other Adobe applications for consistent color management.

Fonts – Distiller now offers:
-Support for OpenType fonts; these are always embedded in the PDF file even if "Embed all fonts" is unchecked. Also, OpenType fonts are always converted to Type1 fonts by the AdobePS driver.
-The ability to find system TrueType fonts
-Greatly improved control of CJK font embedding.

Advanced Features – Distiller now has these features:
-The UI includes more job options and has a more logical organization
-The Apply Transfer Functions feature from Acrobat 3.0x has been restored
-The ability to detect printer’s marks from Quark Xpress and generates correct TrimBox and BleedBox for imposition.

Transparency support:
The transparency of PDFs exported from other applications maintain their viewing and printing parity in Brazil. Brazil provides full support for import and export of PDF 1.4 including the viewing of transpar-ent content and accurate blending mode previews.

Grids and x,y mouse position support:
-Grids: A new document grid snapping feature replaces Acrobat 4’s Forms grid-snapping feature. To use: Select Grids from the View menu.
-x,y mouse position: the viewer now reports the x,y position of the mouse. To use this feature, select Show Info from the Window menu.

New Printing features:
-Printing Tips takes you to Acrobat’s printing support web page on Adobe’s web site. To use: select Printing Tips from the Print dialog.
-A print preview function provides an approximate view of how a page will be printed.
-The advanced print dialog allows you to choose the paper tray to output to based on the page size in the PDF file. (available for PostScript and GDI print paths).
-Tiling allows you to generate multiple sheets from a PDF page larger than the paper you’re printing to.
-Acrobat Brazil’s tiling feature includes a Printers marks on/off button and a Page Information on/off button.
-The Printers marks on/off button causes Acrobat to emit US or Japanese crop and bleed marks positioned properly according to crop and bleed box locations.
-The Page information on/off button causes Acrobat to emit document title, date, time and docu-ment page number outside of bleed area or 1/4" away from crop area.

Troubleshooting Issues

Using the Toolbar

Acrobat's toolbars can be torn-off, docked on the top, and their geometry may be changed. Torn-off toolbars cannot be combined by dragging the title bar of the toolbar; use the drag handle of the toolbar instead.[398112]

Accessibility

When using assistive technology, Adobe recommends that you only open one document in Acrobat at a time. Please close the current document before opening the next.

The Preference Panel for Comments includes an option to open pop-ups automatically on mouse over. When this option is selected and the mouse sits over a comment for several seconds, the comment's note will be opened until the mouse moves off the comment. Comments that are opened via mouse over are not exposed to the screen reader, and the enabling of this preference is discouraged when using a screen reader. To read the note attached to a comment via a screen reader, move focus to the comment with Tab or Shift-Tab keyboard commands and open the comment with the Enter key.[379685]

Batch Processing

During Batch processing partial warning messages are displayed; to see all messages open the batch processing log file whose location is specified in the Batch Processing Preference Panel. [384438]

Catalog

Please do not use high-ANSI or the "/" character in file names, index names or descriptions.

Catalog will not index any file beneath a directory with a path length greater than 205 characters, since this resulting in file path names close to 256 characters. After completing the build, Catalog may claim to have found new file(s) when in fact it did not add them to the index. [272841]

If PDF files are removed from a directory that Catalog has indexed, the file count shown under Acrobat Search -> Indexes -> info may be out of date. Rebuilding the index should correct the information. [118683, 388980]

Chinese, Korean, and Japanese (CJK) Acrobat Substitution Fonts

Attempting to use the Acrobat CJK substitution fonts outside of Acrobat is not recommended and results may be unpredictable. [390851]

CJK Text Display in Acrobat Dialogs

On a Roman system, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese (CJK) text cannot be displayed in Acrobat dialogs. Acrobat requires a CJK system with the appropriate CJK system font in order to display CJK characters in its dialogs.[395326]

CMYK Color Documents

Viewing CMYK documents in Acrobat Brazil beta three
If you are viewing CMYK documents with Acrobat Brazil beta three and do not have Photoshop 6.0 also installed, Acrobat Brazil may not reproduce the CMYK colors correctly when Brazil’s default color management settings are in effect. To obtain correct CMYK color reproduction, select Preferences from the Edit menu, open the Color Management Preferences Panel and set the CMYK working space to "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP)".

Color Management

You may notice that color files viewed in Reader appear differently than when they are viewed in Acrobat. If you want to ensure that such files appear the same in both Reader and Acrobat, in Acrobat's Color Management Preferences Panel set the CMYK working space to "None". [390482]

Online Comments

If you open a PDF file from a browser, add a comment to the file and then refresh the page before Sending or Synchronizing your comments, Acrobat Brazil may crash depending upon the specific Online comments settings used. To avoid this problem, always Synchronize or Send your comments before refreshing your browser or going to another page.

To use a database repository, you must have a SQL server driver installed on your system before you install Acrobat Brazil.

On rare occasions users may fail to see each other's online comments if the web server the PDF document came from doesn't consistently translate to the same internet address. For example, as of this writing ftp.sample.gov can translate to 208.185.132.75 or 208.184.22.41 ). If you encounter this problem, make sure the people with whom you are collaborating use the IP address instead of the name of the machine (for example, http://208.185.132.75) when specifying the URL for the PDF. Note that this does not affect your online collaboration server settings and applies to all server settings types.[393719, 397862]

Pages that contain Comments may print blank. If this happens, uncheck the "Comments" check box in the Print dialog and print the document again.

Distiller

WingDings may be substituted with ZapfDingbats by Windows PostScript driver.
If Windows' TrueType font "WingDings" is used in the original file (such as a Microsoft Word file), it may be substituted with Type1 font "ZapfDingbats" in a PostScript file by the AdobePS or PScript PostScript driver with Distiller's PPD file. As a result, wrong characters are saved in a PDF file. This is due to the Distiller PPD file not being set correctly. Font entries in the Distiller PPD need to use the following format: *Font ZapfDingbats: Special "(002.000)" Special ROM [376930]

If you attempt to distill a large number of files, the root hard drive may run out of hard disk space. The symptom is that Distiller crashes and this message displays: ACRODIST caused an invalid page fault in module ACRODISTDLL.DLL at 0157:66030899. [291860]

Distiller Printer

Distiller Printer may not be installed on Windows 95. To correct this problem use Regedit available on the Start menu to create this Registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Common Desktop. The value of the key should be copied from Registry key: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Desktop. [390567]

Forms

Issues with Forms authoring and Forms data entry

Setting up a form with a button that sends a PDF via email does not work. If you set up a form with a button and then open the form from any browser, when the button is pressed the PDF to be emailed will not be found. Use Javascript instead of using an ExecMenu action. [266936]

Text disappears if user changes field properties' options. After entering data into a form field, be careful not to change the properties of the form field as the data entered is blanked. [379521]

Netscape 6

Acrobat installs a plug-in to work with Netscape 4.x browsers. This plug-in enables users to download, view, navigate and print Adobe PDF files, and to fill in PDF forms while working inside the browser. With Netscape 6, PDF files must be downloaded in their entirety before they can be viewed. Also, with Netscape 6, PDF forms cannot be filled in when viewed within the Browser. To print a PDF file from Netscape 6 use the print icon on the Acrobat toolbar from within Netscape instead of File>Print.

PDFMaker

In Office applications, when you use PDFMaker to create a PDF on a document that has 72 dpi or larger text, the text is not recognized as text and structure will not be added to the PDF file. This happens on Windows 98, and Windows NT. [365025]

Office applications do not print Outline styled text as text, but instead draw vectors to generate the outline "text." Such text is not recognized as text and structure can not be added to the PDF file. This happens on all Windows operating systems.[392446]

Reflow

Acrobat Brazil does not support reflowing PDF’s written in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean languages. If you attempt to reflow such a PDF, part of the text may disappear or roman character data may appear in place of the Japanese, Chinese, or Korean characters. Other symptoms are unexpected line feeds and incorrect word spacing. [377802]

Documents cannot be reflowed at certain magnification and window width combinations. On a 16-inch monitor documents cannot be reflowed after about 850% magnification. On a 19-inch monitor, documents cannot be reflowed after about 1195% magnification. [384793]

While viewing a document in Reflow mode, avoid selecting one of the tools listed below. Reflow is a viewing technology. Reflow automatically turns off if you select any tool that allows modification of the PDF file. The tools are:
-Text Select Tool
-Zoom Tool
-Graphics Select Tool
-Free Text Tool
-Pencil Tool
-Highlight Tool
-Movie Tool
-Link Tool
-Article Tool
-Crop Tool
-Form Tool
-Digital Signature Tool
-Touch Up Text, Object, and Order Tools

To restore the appearance of the document, select the hand tool. [386234]

Save As

When you open PDF files created in earlier versions of Acrobat and then do a Save As in Acrobat Brazil, the size of the PDF file may increase. [382608]

Users should select ZIP if they are going to run 'Paper Capture' on image(s) with consistent color patches to avoid unwanted strips and bands.[390390]

While Acrobat Save As allows you to save TIFF files with JPEG compression, applications other than Acrobat 5.0 may not be able to open them successfully. If you will be using other applications to view such files, don't use any of the JPEG compression setting options for Save As TIFF Grayscale/Color Compression.[392855]

Scanning

Scanning of double-sided documents may fail or black data may be displayed in the Viewer when the document size is set to the maximum. These problems were seen with the Bell & Howell 500FB scanner using CFM-Twain Aficio IS01 Version 5.00.2134 [375969, 376900]

If your document jams during scanning, blank data may be displayed in the Viewer. Remove the paper jam, discard the blank document, and try again. [386001]

If your scanner loses power during scanning, Acrobat Brazil does not detect this error and may need to be restarted. [388238]

With a Fujitsu STI M3093DG using TWAIN driver 1.7 Version 3.05.002b on Windows 2000 or Twain Driver 32 Version 7.01.00 on Windows NT, you cannot use resolution more than 200 dpi or 150X150 Dpi if the Duplex option is selected with Scan Mode Grayscale; it works fine with Black White or other Scan mode. [380504]

Scanning from an ADF with a Canon FB1200S scanner using Twain ScanGear CS-S4.3 Version 1.07 may result in blank data being displayed. [383220]

If you leave a document in a scanner’s glass flatbed, and try to scan a document using the Automatic Document Feeder, the acquisition of raster data when using a Twain driver gets corrupted, and this may result in Acrobat Brazil displaying blank data. [389125]

SendMail

If users of Outlook Express 4.x have Outlook Express set up as their default e-mail application, but do not have it set up as their default simple MAPI client, Acrobat may hang when mailing documents. Outlook Express 5.x fixes this problem.[384928, 390127, 396993]

TouchUp

Issues regarding the TouchUp Text tool and stroke width
If you change the stroke color of text using the TouchUp Text tool, then reduce the text size, the stroke may become very thick and not reduce with the text size. If this should occur, change the outline color to none, then reapply the outline color again and the stroke will appear correct.
[284127]

If you highlight text in a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean PDF and then attempt to change the font, the text becomes corrupted. [379570]

If you try to insert roman character data into a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean PDF, you will not be able to swtich back to a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean character set. [297687]

Gradient mesh is not passed to Illustrator 8
If you have artwork in a PDF file that contains a gradient mesh that created in AI8, and you try to edit the artwork, the mesh isn't opened in Illustrator. There is no workaround.
[296182]

The Touch Up Order tool is intended to work only with Tagged PDF files. If you select the Touch Up tool, you can expand the Touch Up tools available to include the Touch Up Order tool and the Touch Up Object tool. [385937, 359441]

Transparency Support

PDFs containing transparency (produced by Illustrator 9 or other transparency aware applications) may not view or print correctly.

Web Buy

You must have Windows 2000 SP1 installed to use the "lock to Zip drive" feature.[390998]

Web Services

Web Services requires Winsock2; when Winsock2 is not available Web Services disables itself. On Windows operating systems except Windows 95, Winsock2 is available because it is installed by either Internet Explorer 4 or Internet Explorer 5. To make Web Services available on Windows 95 install Winsock2 available from Microsoft.[390722]

Using Windows Internet Explorer

If the user installs Acrobat 4.05 after installing Acrobat Brazil, Acrobat Brazil will be opened whenever the user opens Internet Explorer.

When Acrobat Brazil is installed, the installer adds a registry setting for the Acrobat browser helper application -- which says "run our activeX control whenever you launch an IE window". The installer also installs the Acrobat Brazil OCX which will NOT launch Acrobat until a PDF file is opened.

If the user installs Acrobat 4.05 over Acrobat Brazil, Acrobat 4.05 does not know anything about browser helper objects. It does not remove the registry setting. Furthermore, it registers the old OCX as the activeX control for Acrobat. So, when Internet Explorer opens, it sees the Acrobat OCX as a browser helper object, and launches the old Acrobat 4.05 OCX, which does not know about delaying launching. [366101]
